Add the fourth period or remove the ellipsis
Warning2Federal courts21st and 22nd editions
An omission at the end of a quoted sentence keeps that sentence’s own period after the ellipsis, giving four; after a quoted phrase no omission is marked at all.1
- 1R. 5.3(b)(iii) When using quoted language as a full sentence; R. 5.3(b)(iv) When using quoted language as a full sentence; R. 5.3(a) When using quoted language as a phrase or clause.
- 2A warning: the form is usually wrong under the rule in note 1, and context can justify it.
