Abbreviate the whole phrase
Warning2Federal courts, Illinois courts21st and 22nd editions
Some names abbreviate as whole phrases rather than word by word, so a speaker’s title and institution do too — “U.S. Sec’y of State”, not “United States Sec’y of State”.1
- Wrong
- United States Sec’y of State
- Right
- U.S. Sec’y of State
- 1R. 17.2.6 Speeches and Addresses. Tables: T6 Case Names and Institutional Authors in Citations.
- 2A warning: the form is usually wrong under the rule in note 1, and context can justify it.
