Move the semicolon outside the mark
Warning2Federal courts, Illinois courts21st and 22nd editions
Only a comma or a period sits inside the closing quotation mark; a semicolon that joins the quotation to the writer’s own sentence goes after it.1
- 1R. 5.1(b)(iv) Punctuation; B5.1 Generally.
- 2A warning: the form is usually wrong under the rule in note 1, and context can justify it.
