Replace the abbreviation in the Nation’s name
Warning2Federal courts, Illinois courts22nd edition only
A Tribal Nation’s own name stays unabbreviated in its constitution citation, even where T6 shortens it elsewhere: “Const. of the Ak-Chin Indian Community art. I, § 1”, not “Ak-Chin Indian Cmty.”.1
- Wrong
- Ak-Chin Indian Cmty.
- Right
- Const. of the Ak-Chin Indian Community art. I, § 1
- 1B22.2 Tribal Nations Without an Established Citation Format. Tables: T1.5 Tribal Nations; T6 Case Names and Institutional Authors in Citations.
- 2A warning: the form is usually wrong under the rule in note 1, and context can justify it.
